Sargan Eight, Serbia: An Unforgettable Train Journey

The Sargan Eight train is a unique tourist attraction, famous for its picturesque route that traverses the Sargan Mountains, between the Mokra Gora and Sargan Vitasi stations. The name comes from the shape of the route, which describes the number eight, allowing the train to ascend the steep slopes of the mountains through a series of curves and tunnels. The landscapes that the Sargan Eight crosses are absolutely breathtaking.

During the 15-kilometer journey, the train winds through tunnels carved into the rock, crosses bridges, and offers stunning panoramas of the deep valleys and dense forests covering the mountains. Each curve reveals a new, spectacular view, and at the scenic stops, passengers can peacefully admire the wild beauty of the region. The stop in Mokra Gora, a picturesque village located at the foot of the mountains, is another highlight of the Sargan Eight train journey.

Brief History

The Sargan Eight train is more than just a tourist attraction; it is a story in itself, full of history and charm. Built in 1925, this narrow-gauge train was designed to connect Belgrade with Sarajevo, opening up the Mokra Gora region to the world. However, in 1974, the line was abandoned, and the memories faded over time. But, as with all beautiful stories, this train was brought back to life, reviving its distinctive sound on the railways between Mokra Gora and Sargan Vitasi.

What truly makes it special is its spectacular route, which intertwines into the shape of the number eight, climbing steep slopes through tunnels and sharp curves. A journey on this train offers passengers not just a ride, but an unforgettable experience, where the stunning landscapes of the surrounding mountains and valleys take your breath away. Each stop becomes a moment of reflection, an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of nature and explore Mokra Gora, a village with a unique charm.

Route and Duration of the Journey

The route followed by the Čira train is as follows: Mokra Gora – Sargan Vitasi – Mokra Gora. The duration of a complete journey is two and a half hours. The train stops at various scenic points along the way, but the stop in Mokra Gora is the highlight of this unique journey.

In the heart of Mokra Gora, you’ll find Drvengrad, also known as the “Wooden Village,” a remarkable creation of Emir Kusturica. This wooden village was built by the director for his film Life is a Miracle and represents much more than a simple settlement; it is a living testament to Serbian traditions. Here, wood and culture blend in perfect harmony. The atmosphere in Drvengrad is magical, with narrow streets and wooden buildings that seem to come alive, each with its own story to tell.
