Drvengrad – Mokra Gora, Serbia: Kusturica’s Wooden Village

Mokra Gora, translated as “Wet Mountain,” is a hidden gem in the heart of Serbia, a picturesque village located in the town of Uzice in the southwest of Serbia, enchanting visitors with its dreamy landscapes. Nestled on the slopes of the Zlatibor Mountains, this magical place is perfect for an escape from urban chaos. I arrived in Mokra Gora just as the sun was setting. The rays bathed the colorful village in a magical aura, creating a fairytale atmosphere.

Mokra Gora became famous after the reconstruction of the narrow-gauge railway called “Sargan Eight” in 2003. It was also by the Čira train that we reached it, after a journey in which we admired the spectacular landscapes of deep valleys and dense forests that cover the mountains.

The stop at the Mokra Gora station was the highlight of this trip on the narrow-gauge train. The train is a remarkable tourist attraction, known for its scenic route through the Sargan Mountains between the Mokra Gora and Sargan Vitasi stations. The route of the narrow-gauge railway forms the number 8 along its entire course, which is how the name “Sargan Eight” came about.

In the heart of Mokra Gora lies Drvengrad, also known as the “Wooden Village,” an extraordinary creation by Emir Kusturica, a wooden village built by the director for his film Life is a Miracle. In 2004, Kusturica financed the construction of the ethno-village named Drvengrad, a project for which he received the “European Architecture Award Philippe Rotthier” from the “Brussels Foundation for Architecture.”

This village is more than just a settlement; it is a living testament to Serbian traditions, a place where wood and culture blend harmoniously. The atmosphere in Drvengrad is magical, with narrow streets and wooden buildings that seem to come to life, each with its own story to tell. Drvengrad is a fascinating example of traditional architecture and a place where Serbian culture comes to life through art, film, and music.

Events

Today, artists and culture enthusiasts gather for film, music, and art festivals, transforming the village into a vibrant and lively place. One of the most renowned events is the Kustendorf Film Festival, which takes place annually in January. This festival attracts cinephiles and acclaimed directors, offering a platform for showcasing independent films. The atmosphere is electrifying, with film screenings, creative workshops, and discussions with filmmakers, where every participant has the chance to get involved and find inspiration.

In addition to the film festival, Drvengrad also hosts various musical events, such as traditional and folk music concerts, bringing together local and international artists. These performances are not only opportunities to listen to quality music but also chances to connect with Serbian culture in an authentic way.
