Château de Pourtalès, a fairytale accommodation in Strasbourg

Notes of Christmas carols play softly. Snowflakes begin to fall gently, so fragile, almost imperceptible. Are they real, or is the story starting to take shape in my mind exactly as I imagined it? It’s already dusk, and my steps are guided by the lights placed on either side of the path that winds gently, allowing me to discover only a small part of the impressive building submerged in magic. My heart leaps as the castle is revealed in all its splendor.

The concept of time loses its meaning in this setting, so I take my time, slowly walking along the path toward the entrance. I want to savor this moment as much as possible! As I enter the reception, I can’t focus for a second on the incredibly kind lady at the desk; my gaze keeps shifting left and right, drawn to the magical Christmas universe that I can’t wait to enjoy in peace. I finally made it to my room, but I didn’t stay there too long. The real spectacle was in the hallways on the ground floor.

The room is simple, elegant, and extremely spacious, with a bed that invites you to linger in sheets that creak like snow beneath your feet. The large windows, with views of the surrounding forest where the castle stands, allow sunlight to flood the room, giving you the perfect nudge to go out and explore.

The rooms on the ground floor are true works of art! The rooms with high ceilings are adorned with enormous paintings, sculptures, massive wooden furniture, and imposing chandeliers. The fireplaces, grand in size, have been dressed up for the holiday season, and the Christmas tree weaves the most beautiful winter tale. I walked from room to room, my eyes wide open to the magical world I had entered. I admired every corner of these rooms, every painting, the beautifully decorated ceilings, and the windows framed with works of art. Christmas music echoed throughout, enveloping the castle in a festive atmosphere. I fell in love with this place, and I almost didn’t want to leave to explore the city. For me, here is an entire universe, one where I truly feel at home.

I arrived at Château de Pourtalès, a storybook stay in Strasbourg, France. I came to the heart of Alsace to experience a winter tale, and unexpectedly, I experienced this story from the very moment of check-in.

We left Sibiu without pre-booking our accommodation. The route we followed was – Sibiu – Vienna – Munich – Strasbourg, with the plan to visit the most beautiful Christmas markets, and the goal was to reach Colmar and Strasbourg. The other stops were just overnight stays to make the journey to the fairytale cities of Alsace a little easier.

The plan was to sleep one night in Strasbourg and two more in Colmar. I found the accommodation at Château de Pourtalès on Booking while we were on our way to Strasbourg, and I initially booked one night. Then I added another, and another. Once we got there, I knew I didn’t want to try anything else, even though the distance from Strasbourg to Colmar was about 1 hour (70 km). We preferred to drive back to this fairy-tale castle for our nights’ rest.

Thus, we established our base in Strasbourg, in a location straight out of a fairy tale, the most beautiful place I have ever slept during Christmas time, and perhaps even beyond. Château de Pourtalès, a castle located on the outskirts of Strasbourg, France, is an imposing architectural gem, full of history and a distinct touch of elegance. With a history spanning several centuries, this grand castle was built in 1750 and served as the summer residence for the noble Bussière family.

Château de Pourtalès becomes even more special during the Christmas season, when the magical atmosphere is amplified by the decorations and sparkling lights. The rooms transform into a festive paradise, bringing the joy and warmth of the holidays right to the heart of the castle.

Château de Pourtalès is the perfect place to experience the luxury and beauty of a bygone era, surrounded by a charming and peaceful setting.
