Sjenica is a small town located in the southwest of Serbia, in the mountainous region of Sandžak, known for its stunning natural landscapes and rich history. With a population of approximately 14,000 residents, Sjenica is situated at an altitude of over 1,000 meters, making it one of the highest towns in Serbia. While Sjenica remains a lesser-known destination, it captivates visitors with its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere.

It is the perfect place for nature lovers and adventurers in search of hiking opportunities, as well as for those seeking to enjoy fresh air and a well-deserved break from urban hustle and bustle.

On our way to Novi Pazar, we made a brief stop at the Sultan Valida Mosque in Sjenica.

Sultan Valida Mosque in Sjenica

An important cultural and historical monument, the Sultan Valida Mosque boasts impressive architecture reflecting the region’s Islamic traditions. Built in the 18th century, it is dedicated to the mother of Sultan Mehmed IV, Sultan Valida.

The mosque stands out for its intricate details, towering minaret, and ornate facade. The interior is equally impressive, with walls adorned with geometric patterns that create a peaceful atmosphere.

Religious events and ceremonies are frequently held at this sacred site, attracting not only worshippers but also tourists eager to explore the region’s rich cultural heritage. The Sultan Valida Mosque is not just a place of worship but a symbol of the history and identity of the Sjenica community. Visiting this monument provides valuable insight into the multicultural heritage of Serbia.

Uvac Nature Reserve

The reserve stretches along the Uvac River, which has carved a winding canyon over time, forming one of the most stunning landscapes in Serbia. The river’s meanders are emblematic of this area. The surrounding mountain peaks, covered in dense forests, complete this wild landscape.

The reserve is famous for its population of vultures, one of the largest in Europe. These vultures, with a wingspan that can reach 2.8 meters, are a protected species and the symbol of the Uvac region. Visitors have the opportunity to observe these birds in their natural habitat as they soar above the canyon. From above, the Uvac Canyon is simply magnificent, a true masterpiece sculpted by nature. Its spectacular meanders, formed by the river, create a breathtaking landscape—a labyrinth of green waters, surrounded by steep cliffs. I was fortunate enough to witness this spectacle from one of the high vantage points, Molitva, and the view from there will stay etched in my memory forever.

From this height, Uvac seems unreal. The river’s fluid contours form a series of curves that fascinate with their perfection, and the contrast between the blue-green of the water and the color of the rocks is simply hypnotic.

The graceful flight of the Griffon vultures completes the scene, as these sky giants seem to dance in circles above the canyon. If you want to enjoy a breath-taking panorama and truly feel the power of nature, Uvac seen from above is an experience that must be lived at least once in a lifetime.

The Uvac Canyon can also be experienced from below, on the river, with a boat ride. We didn’t have time to take this boat trip, but it is certainly something I would add to the list if I returned to the area.

Pester Plateau and Wild Birds

Pester Field, located in the southwest of Serbia, is an expansive plain, one of the most picturesque and untouched regions in the country. The landscapes here are simple yet stunning, with endless stretches of fields and gentle hills that undulate on the horizon. This place offers a sense of peace and tranquility, an escape from the fast-paced rhythm of modern life.

What impressed me the most about Pester Field was the pure and authentic atmosphere of the place. Here, time seems to stand still, and nature reigns supreme with open skies and an almost sacred calm. The locals, simple and friendly people, live a quiet life largely based on farming and animal husbandry. If you venture through this land, you’ll discover rustic landscapes with traditional sheepfolds and flocks of sheep, elements that perfectly complement the rural charm of the area. Pester Field isn’t just about beautiful landscapes; it’s an experience in simplicity and a return to the essentials.

Pester Field is a true paradise for nature lovers and bird enthusiasts. This vast and unspoiled region of Serbia is home to an impressive diversity of birds, serving as an important habitat for many rare and migratory species.

As I explored this place, I felt as though I had stepped into a world where birds are the absolute masters of the sky and earth. With binoculars in hand and an open heart, every step through Pester Field was an invitation to discover the beauty and fragility of this wild world.

The Vulture Observation Point

One of the most impressive attractions in Pester Field is the vulture observation point, where these majestic predators can be seen feeding. Located in the heart of untouched nature, the observation point offers a unique experience for bird enthusiasts and wildlife lovers.

It is a rare opportunity to see griffon vultures and golden eagles up close, species protected in Serbia, in their natural environment. These vultures are fed periodically by teams dedicated to species conservation, and the feeding area is a strategic point to ensure their survival in the wild. Tourists and bird watchers can observe these grand moments from a distance, capturing stunning scenes of these kings of the sky in action.

When we arrived, just after sunset, we didn’t find any vultures, but only their traces: the remains of animals they had fed on during the day. Our guide explained that the animals brought here as food for the birds are dead animals collected from villages, tested for diseases by veterinarians, and then brought here.

Selek Ranch

Spanning across six hundred hectares in the village of Caricina on the Pester Plateau, Selek Ranch is an enormous complex home to 400 free-roaming horses, hundreds of sheep, goats, and buffaloes. Located at the heart of the Pester Plateau, known for its cool climate and expansive landscapes, the farm benefits from an ideal natural environment for animal husbandry and the production of high-quality dairy products.

Selek Ranch produces and supplies most of the food served at the Borovi Hotel restaurants in Sjenica. A guided tour of the Caricina farm is available for hotel guests, offering the opportunity to taste and purchase organic products.

The experience at the farm was sensational, thanks to the adorable animals I had the chance to admire and pet. At the farm, I discovered one of the heaviest horses in the world, a candidate for the Guinness World Records, as well as the guardians of the place – Turkish Kangal dogs. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the horses running freely in the paddock and rolling in the hot sand.
