Teleki Castle in Gornești is one of the most impressive castles I have visited in Transylvania. Nicknamed the “Treasure of Mureș,” the castle makes a remarkable first impression with its Baroque architecture, the bridge crossing the moat in front of the estate, and the dendrological park that surrounds it. It is one of those places that makes you feel as though you have stepped into a fairytale, and the atmosphere of the entire estate only enhances that feeling.

The castle is well worth visiting both for its exterior and for its elegant interior rooms, where you can admire beautifully decorated halls, painted ceilings, and original architectural details preserved over the centuries. I was particularly impressed by the statues in the park, the collection of centuries-old trees, and the story behind the castle itself, which has 52 rooms and 365 windows, symbolizing the weeks and days of the year. Together, these elements make Teleki Castle one of the most beautiful and elegant castles in Transylvania.

7. Bethlen Castle in Criș (Mureș County)

Bethlen Castle in Criș is one of those places that surprises you from the very first moment. Rákóczi–Bornemisza Castle is one of those places that surprises you without revealing its beauty at first glance. Hidden among the trees in the center of Gurghiu, at the foot of the hill crowned by the ruins of the old fortress, the castle blends seamlessly into the landscape, almost as if it were part of nature itself. Although the interior is not currently open to visitors, a walk around the castle and through the surrounding dendrological park makes the stop well worth your time.

The dendrological park is one of the most beautiful in Transylvania and is home to more than 350 tree species, many of them exotic and brought from different parts of the world. If you have more time, it is also worth hiking up to the ruins of Gurghiu Fortress, located just above the castle, where you can enjoy a different perspective over the entire area. Together, the castle, the park, and the fortress form one of the most beautiful historic ensembles in Mureș County.

10. Ugron Castle in Zau de Câmpie (Mureș County)

Ugron Castle, also known as the Calendar Castle, is one of the most unusual castles in Transylvania. Perched on a hill at the edge of the village of Zau de Câmpie, it impresses both with its architecture, inspired by medieval French castles, and with the romantic story that made it famous. According to legend, Baron István Ugron built it as a declaration of love, and the entire building was designed around the principles of a calendar, making it a truly unique monument.

It is worth admiring the castle from every angle to appreciate the details that make it so distinctive and to learn the legend that surrounds it. If you visit in spring, you can combine your trip with a stop at the nearby Steppe Peony Nature Reserve, one of the most spectacular natural attractions in Mureș County.
